Admiral Killick, Haiti c.1902

Hammerton Killick was an admiral in the Haitian Navy. He was killed in the 1902 Fermin rebellion when he refused to surrender his ship to the German warship SMS Panther.

Killick, who rather than to submit to the Germans, preferred to blow the boat “La Crête-à-Pierrot” in the Bay of Gonaïves, on 6 September 1902. This heroic Act created a strong emotion in the anguished hearts of Patriots Haitians.

A naval base in Port-au-Prince is named after him. In 1943, he was honored with a postage stamp.
